Volunteer Teaching Assistant 
 
We are looking for volunteers to support learners in various classes such as ESOL, Preparing for Work, etc. The learners will be refugees and members of the community in Sandwell with little or no existing English skills. The aim is to enable them to progress to accredited ESOL courses, further training and/or meaningful employment. Refugees in particular can find themselves isolated from society and this is often exacerbated by poor communication skills in English, so we need your help. 
 
This opportunity is open to anyone over 18 who would like a challenging yet enjoyable volunteering experience, to gain valuable new skills, and boost their CV. 
 
Ashley Community Housing offers:

Brief description of role: 
Teaching Assistants will support class Tutors to deliver classes for adults who need help with English skills, looking for work, or are learning a new skill. 
Teaching Assistants will be expected to provide support to the same group of learners from 3 to 9 hours a week. 
Classes will take place at our training venue in Cape Hill, Smethwick, Birmingham and all resources for delivery will be provided on site (please note that classes generally run in the daytime Monday-Friday) 
 
Preferred skills, knowledge and abilities: 
Enthusiastic and self-motivated 
An understanding of issues affecting people with little or no functional English 
Good listening and communication skills 
An understanding of the issues affecting refugees 
Reliable, punctual and organised 
Ability to speak an additional language. 
Good team player and able to use initiative 
Experience of supporting adult learners 
 
Do not worry if you do not have all of the preferred abilities, above all we are looking for people who are non-judgemental, friendly, understanding, adaptable and patient.
